Coaching, Counseling, and Observing
Coaching and Counseling
Coaching and counseling in higher education teaching have experienced significant growth in recent years. Through one-on-one sessions with experienced coaches, educators have the opportunity to reflect on various aspects of their role as lecturers and university teaching. The topics covered during counseling and coaching sessions may include:
- Educational planning of courses
- Dealing with students or with co-instructors
- Basic conditions of teaching
- Conducting courses
- The role of the lecturer
- Problems in teaching (e.g., negative evaluations)
Coaching and counseling take place in a confidential setting.
At the beginning of each session, the goals for that session are set.

Observation
Professional Observation
Within the framework of professional observation, experienced higher education teaching specialists from the FBZHL will visit you in your courses. The focus of the observation will be determined with you in advance – for example, the use of methods, slide design, or presentation. You will receive individual feedback on these topics after the visit to the course.
Arrange an observation appointment with us. The interview, the questions, and the concerns discussed there will be treated confidentially.
If you are interested, please contact Dr. Uwe Fahr.
Peer Observation
In the peer observation, lecturers at FAU visit each other in their courses. The aim is to promote working on teaching skills collaboratively through exchange between colleagues. The lecturers give each other feedback in a confidential setting.
If peer observation is offered at a faculty, it is an additional benefit that subject-specific knowledge and subject-didactic experiences are exchanged and passed on between lecturers. In this way, the quality and further development of teaching can be ensured in the long term, even with a high turnover of staff. The FBZHL is happy to support and accompany you if you want to introduce peer observation at your faculty.
